Peter Asmussen är born 1957 - dramatist and author. Lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Peter Asmussen has produced a stunning variety of work that includes theatre, prose, film and opera. Among his achievements are "Forbrydelse" (Crime) and “Stranden” (The Beach) which have been translated into French, English and Italian. 2006 sees his popular play Isbrandt, which has already been released in France as “Brule par la Glace” and Italian “as Bruciate dal Ghiaccio”, translated into English. In Paris Isbrandt enjoyed its greatest success, extended for nearly six months after rave reviews. His play “Alle Hans Gerninger” (All his Deeds) was nominated best Danish play of the year in 2002. The Copenhagen Royal Opera premiered "Under Himlen" (Under the Sky), for which Asmussen wrote the libretto, in 2005. Asmussen's plays have been performed all over Europe. In the autumn of 2005 a collection of his prose "Hul i mørket" (A Hole in the Dark) was published to critical acclaim in Denmark, as well a collection of plays in Italian. Also in 2005 Stranden (The Beach) was produced in London, and published by Oberon Books.In 2000, when Peter Asmussen was awarded the Kjeld Abel Prize, Danish theatre critic Jens Kistrup described the author by stating “that one can see Peter Asmussen’s oeuvre as a series of attempts, of experiments, where those that are most dangerous, most radical, are those that are the true successes.” Asmussen is otherwise quite difficult to characterise as a dramatist, and he himself avoids speaking out about his work. He has been quoted many times saying that he cannot explain what his plays are about, because he does not write to exemplify any life philosophy or message. Those who see his plays decide for themselves what they are about. But some have seen themes in Peter Asmussen’s dramatic production; among other things, Asmussen is focussed on exposing the underbelly of love in conflict. Abbreviated Bibliography Plays:
